We Are Not Engaged, Just Committed – Yeni Kuti Clears The Air

Fela’s eldest child and mother of his first grandchild, Yeni Kuti has addressed reports in the media that she got engaged last week saying that what she received from her long term partner, Theo Lawson was not a marriage proposal but a call for deeper commitment.

When contacted by Encomium, Yeni clarified that the ring given to her on her 55th birthday was for more commitment, not a marriage proposal. She said, “He did give me a ring on my birthday, it was his mother’s wedding ring. It does not mean we are engaged. It was a sign of commitment to one another.”

Many years back, Yeni, a choreographer, designer, manager and TV anchor, made everyone believe she had put the idea of remarrying to rest. She was once married to former diplomat, event MC and banker. Femi Segun who died in an accident in March 2014 long after their union collapsed.
