Femi Lateef Adebayo better known simply as Femi Adebayo is an accomplished actor, director, producer, writer and trained lawyer known for his role in notable movies like Atónà (2009), Omo pupa (2008) and Ladies Gang 2 (2011).
Early Life
Femi Adebayo was born on 31 December, 1972. He is the son of veteran Nollywood actor, Adebayo Salami known as Oga Bello. He hails from Ilorin, Kwara state but he was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. he was born into a large polygamous family and according him, his father has more than 12 children many of whom are already graduates.
Education
Adebayo studied Law at the University of Ilorin, after which he proceeded to earn a master’s degree in Theatre Arts.
Switching careers
Femi’s long term ambition when he was much younger was to be a lawyer. His father had always been very supportive of his children’s career choices no matter which path any of them decided to follow.
Adebayo’s love for acting and subsequent sojourn into the field was born after seeing his father on television at a young age. When his father noticed his interest in acting, he gave a young Femi all the support he needed even after he completed a law degree. In an interview he expressed how liberal his father was to his decision to take up acting saying, “My father did not force any career on any of his children. He left us to study the courses we showed interest in and have capacity for. I must also say that he influenced me indirectly as an actor because if I had not enjoyed his acting style while I was growing up, there was no way I could have showed interest in acting.” –
Delving into acting
The critically acclaimed actor had his first movie role in a Tade Ogidan movie titled ‘Owoblow’ which was shot in 1995. Ever since his big break, the vibrant thespian has gone on to become a household name as far as Yoruba movies are concerned. starred in hundreds of home videos and has won the hearts of Yoruba movie lovers. He has gone on to star in movies like Oba-Elesan,Tojo – terun, Baba – Ologba, Idanwo, Shola fe Pami, Ikan, Aranbada, Agbara Obirin, Mayomi, Ole, Inu, Orija ju Ogun, Ogologo, Fitila, Ile and a host of others. In 2006, he produced a movie titled ‘Idanwo’.
Femi also founded a film school named J-15 School of Performing Arts, and it is located in Ibadan. The school has churned out over 150 graduands since inception and boasts of graduates of Theatre Arts from other Nigerian universities as lecturers.
Family Life
The celebrated actor maintains a cordial relationship with his actor father and holds a great deal of respect for him. He ended his marriage to the mother of his three children in 2015. The actor revealed in an interview with City People that the marriage broke-up because his ex-wife was not in agreement with his profession.
Controversies
He was once romantically linked with fellow movie star, Funke Akindele but he shut down those rumours stating they were just friends and she had nothing to do with the break down of his previous marriage.
Awards and Endorsements
In 1996 , Femi Adebayo won Best Upcoming Actor of the year 1996 at The Movie Awards in Nigeria. He won four awards including Best Yoruba actor at the 17th African Film Awards known as Afro Hollywood awards which was held at the Stratford Town Hall, London and also the same category for the Best of Nollywood BON Awards in 2012.
In 2015, he bagged the City People Entertainment Award For Best Movie Producer Of The Year (Yoruba). In that same year, he appended his signature to a multimillion naira endorsement deal with Trophy Beer as a brand ambassador
