2 He was raised Christian by his mother who was an ordained minister.

3 He attended St. Mary’s College of California in Moraga, where he graduated in 1996 with a degree in mass communication.

4 Though Ali entered SMC with a basketball scholarship, he became disenchanted with the idea of a sports career because of the treatment given to the team’s athletes.

5 Following a sabbatical year where Ali worked for Gavin Report, he enrolled in New York University’s graduate acting program, earning his master’s degree in 2000.

6 Ali converted to Islam in 2009.

7  He is married to Amatus Sami-Karim and they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Bari Najma, February 22, 2017.
